LDS Church Releases Statement About Priesthood, Apostasy

Angel Moroni(Salt Lake City, UT)  —  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is speaking out on apostasy and the role of the priesthood following the excommunication of a feminist activist.  The Council of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles released a statement over the weekend saying that only men are allowed to hold the priesthood, but that the blessings of the priesthood are equally available to both men and women, and that all service in the church has equal merit in the eyes of God.  The statement also defines apostasy as “repeatedly acting in clear, open and deliberate public opposition to the church or its faithful leaders, or persisting, after receiving counsel, in teaching false doctrine.”  The statement comes after church leaders excommunicated SLC activist and Ordain Women founder Kate Kelly last week after convicting her of apostasy for encouraging the church to allow women to become priests.
