(Gunnison, Colo._A western Colorado county has taken the first step toward suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for listing the Gunnison sage grouse — also found in San Juan County,Utah — as a threatened species. Officials in Gunnison County, in the heart of the bird’s habitat, filed a notice of intent to sue, arguing the listing wasn’t necessary. About 5,000 Gunnison grouse remain, only in Colorado and Utah. The bird was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act last month. Colorado and Utah argue the listing was unnecessary or improper. The environmental groups say the bird should have been given the more protective endangered status.
